I finished this book this week and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! It blended historical fiction and fairytale perfectly, and I now can't wait to read more by Kate Forsyth.

*From The Interwebs*

I got nominated by author Georgia Bell for the 'Versatile Blogger Award' award 2014 which was a lovely surprise!

*Book Haul*

No review copies this week, but I did get a few other books and went totally into historical fiction mode when I went to the library...

  • Wolf In White Van by John Darnielle - I won this book from a goodreads giveaway from an Australian author, and it's been recommended by Daniel Handler (ie. Lemony Snicket) so I'm excited!

  • Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz - I FINALLY BOUGHT A COPY!!! So all of you bookworms out there who have been singing its praises for so long have completely convinced me to read it and I can't wait :)
  • Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson - I'd been wanting to read this book for ages since I loved Peter Pan, and so I once again said goodbye to my book buying ban and got myself a copy.

  • Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel - This is meant to be one of the best pieces of historical fiction ever, so I'm looking forward to expanding my reading horizons and checking it out.
  • The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory - I read 'The Other Boleyn Girl' which I liked so this next book by the same author seems promising with all that regal drama.
  • Careless People: Murder, Mayhem, and the Invention of The Great Gatsby by Sarah Churchwell - 'The Great Gatsby' is one of my all time favourite classics and since I will be studying it soon I thought this was a great place to start to get some background info into his life.
  • Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald - As you may notice I've got a bit of  a Fitzgerald-frenzy going on and so I just couldn't help but pick up some of his other works.
  • The Beautiful and the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald - Just the title of this book interested me, and I can't wait to see how it depicts the Jazz Age and flawed characters within it.
  • Flappers and Philosophers by  F. Scott Fitzgerald  - This is a collection of eight short stories from Fitzgerald and I'm interested once again in seeing how the 1920's is depicted.

*Movie Reactions*

The Maze Runner -  I hadn't read the book before I saw this, but I ended up really loving it! The action and suspense was great, the tension palpable and the ending really leaved you wanting to see what could possibly happen next. I definitely can't wait to see the next movie.

The Hundred Foot Journey - This was a great movie with a feel-good vibe. I love how the story developed and how the two rivaling restaurants ended up with their owners becoming friends. I really liked hearing about the French and Indian cuisines, and after watching the movie I felt satisfied with a happy ending.

It's interesting that these are both book-movie adaptations as well - looks like we're seeing a lot more of them lately!

  1. YAY ARISTOTLE AND DANTE. About time :P I really really really (really) hope you like it. But we'd better not build up the hype for you too much, so I'll just say that...it was okay.

    I'm totally lying. It's amazing.

That cover of Wolf in White is making my brain hurt, by the way. I would not be able to look at it for too long :P

    Have a great week!!

    1. I hope I like it too (although I must say, my expectations are now quite high!)
The cover for Wolf In White Van is quite busy, and I too get a little boggled looking at it for a long time, although at the end of the day it's on the inside that counts, and when sitting on my shelf I'll only be seeing the spine anyway - which in this case I think may be a good thing :p

  2. YESS I am so glad you got Aristotle and Dante, it is still my fav book of 2014! I love the cover for Wolf in White though, it's so creative and crazy. Glad to hear you enjoyed The Maze Runner, I can't wait to see it after reading the book.

Here's a link to one of the F Scott Fitzgerald books from my blog: http://www.penguin.com.au/products/9780141194059/great-gatsby-design-coralie-bickford-smith

    1. Thanks for the link to the book Jeann - I'm definitely checking some of these out at The Book Depository to build up my collection. The cover is definitely interesting/different - I'll give it that - and the story sounds great too!

  3. So many amazing books this week Eugenia! And congrats on the nomination :D :D I still haven't watched The Maze Runner yet, so I really need to. I loved the first book but the series does go downhill from there.

    1. Thanks Joy! I'd definitely recommend The Maze Runner, it definitely exceeded my expectations. I'm not sure that I'll go read the books though, as in this case I think I'd like to be surprised by what happens in the following movies :)

  5. I'm so so excited for The Maze Runner movie!! I bought the boxset because...because it was sooo stinkin' cheap at one shop and I just needed it in my life so much. Hopefully I'll eat The Scorch Trials this week. XD EXCITED. Oh but I'm definitely looking up the one recommended by Lemony Snicket. ;-) *dashes for goodreads*

    1. I've seen it around at a great price too but I'm not sure that I'm ready to commit space on my shelf for it - since I'm not sure if I'll go through the whole series. That said, I'll be interested to see what you think of them :) Having something recommended by *the* Lemony Snicket is a pretty big deal, so I'm expecting good things!

  6. Tender is the Night is my all time favourite of Fitz's. It's beautiful, that one. Incredibly raw! I may have to check out Careless people. The whole nihilistic movement that took over around Fitzgerald's period absolutely fascinates me! I've read the Maze Runner but wasn't all too impressed by it. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie though! I've been hearing rave reviews and cannot wait to go see it for myself!

I hope you have a great week ahead and have a fabulous time reading, what with all those amazing books you've picked up! And thank you for the the link <33

  7. Aristotle and Dante! YES! It's beautiful Eugenia, I can almost guarantee that you'll completely fall in love with Dante, it was just incredible! I've wanted to read Tiger Lily for months now, I have a Kindle copy, so I need to squeeze in a read. Can't wait to see what you think of both of them <3

    1. Yay I absolutely can't wait to get into it now, it does look amazing right from the get-go, and the synopsis cinched the deal! Hopefully I'll have reviews up for both of them at some point :)

  8. Historical fiction and fairytale?? I'M TOTALLY IN. Admittedly, historical fiction I'm a little "eh" about, but I love fairytale sort of stories, so I will make a note to pick up a copy of that one. I'm glad you liked The Maze Runner! I cannot wait to see it--I've read the book though wasn't that fussed on it, but the movie looks SO GOOD. I'm also interested to see what you think of Aristotle and Dante... I'm unlike everyone else on that book and didn't like it much, but hopefully, you'll find it good. :)

    1. I hope you do get to read Bitter Greens Kara, it's rapunzel-themed element throughout is really fascinating and woven into the story really well! It seems that perhaps in the case of The Maze Runner, in a unique turn of events, the movie could be better than the book - which doesn't happen very often (although I can't really judge since I haven't read it myself). Thanks for dropping by :)

  9. Nice haul this week! I haven't read Aristotle & Dante or Tiger Lily yet either. I can't wait to see what you think of them both! Oh, I know exactly what you mean with Maze Runner! It was the exact same for me and I haven't read the book either :D
