Top Ten Tuesday: Books I May Never Read

Tuesday 5 May 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by bloggers at The Broke and the BookishThis week I've  picked the top ten books on my TBR that I'll probably never get to reading.

1. Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

6759

It's a well-known, renowned even, piece of literature. But it seems infinitely long, and my TBR is infinitely large - so...I don't know if I will ever get to this (though there is an infinitesimal chance)

2. September Girls by Bennet Madison

16065555

I was curious about this book once upon a time, BUUUT I don't know, the premise just doesn't interest me anymore and from the sounds of some reviews from bloggers whose opinion I trust, it jsut wouldn't be for me.

3. The Returned by Jason Mott

17182421

I originally put this on my TBR once I found out the TV show 'Resurrection' was based on it, but since I didn't really watch it that often I couldn't connect with it, and so this book will probably be waiting a long while.

4. Bound by M.J. Stevens

19877735

Not really sure why I put this on my TBR in the first place, but I haven't been a huge fan of paranormal fantasy recently so it's probably going to stay there forever.

5. Crewel by Gennifer Albin

11556960

I've had this 'to-read' from nearly as far back as when I first got goodreads, and if I haven't read it yet - who knows if I ever will?

6. Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love

7787487

Why on earth did I put it there in the first place? I don't think me and this book are going to happen.

7. A War for Gentlemen by Jackie French

4639469

No, this isn't a book I don't want to read - I just can't find a copy of it anywhere so I don't know if I'll get the chance.

8. Oddily by Linda Pohring

11194946

Hmmm...that cover and the main character's name being 'Oddily' and the sound of a cheesy romance? I don't think so.

9. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

706457

I know this is an EPIC fantasy staple, and I did like the movies...but the size and density is just putting me off.

10. Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray

5797

Maybe one day Mr. Thackeray, but for now I have to make peace with my decision to leave this one for a while.

What do you think of my choices?

  1. Have you read The Hobbit? If The Lord of the Rings' size is putting you off then perhaps opt for that one instead. A bit of a difficult to get used to writing style, but I really enjoyed it. Ahhh. I read Crewel a few years ago and didn't really like it. Still haven't read its sequels. Great list!

    1. I haven't yet Kara - but that does sound like a good idea sometime, I'm definitely willing to try it :)

  2. Oh man, Infinite Jest, so true. It just sounds like such a difficult book to read! But it's one of those ones people talk about if they want to sounds smart haha

I feel like most of the books on my "staying on the shelf" list would be classics. You know, those books that "everyone" should read.

    1. Haha exactly! I might tackle it 'one day', but for now...not so much. There are so many classics I hope to get to soon!

  3. I was interested about September Girls until my friend, who shares quite a similar taste in books with me, did not like it at all. So yeah, that will stay on my shelf as well unread.

    1. Yeah, it just doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. Thanks for following by the way! :)

  4. I'm with you on Oddily. That's just...weird. I kind of want to read Infinite Jest and Lord of the Rings, though. So big, but I've heard great things(and I think some of my friends in the blogosphere might come after me if I don't at least read the Hobbit soon). Great list! Here's my Top Ten.

    1. Yes...it is quite 'odd' (excuse the pun!). The Hobbit from the sounds of things is less daunting, so I hope to try it soon!

  5. I agree about Lord of the Rings. I have zero interest in that book. I did start Infinite Jest once. It seemed great, but it is so long. Also, there are footnotes. I hate that. I had to stop because it was holding my interest. I would like to think I will try again one day, but who knows?

    1. Aah yes footnotes can be irritating, but in some cases I think they could add character. I think Infinite Jest is something that I'm just so curious about because I have seen so much about it. Thanks for stopping by Cynthia :)

  6. I agree with so many of your choices (especially Bound, which has a reeeeally bad cover that puts me so off the book...). I especially agree with not reading Lord of the Rings! I love fantasy and I know I should read it, but it's such a commitment and I don't know if I really *want* to commit to it...I've seen each movie like 100 times and know the story by heart, so reading the books just *feels* pointless to me. :// I know that sounds ridiculous as a book lover, but I can't find it in myself to devote the time to them. Same with Game of Thrones and Outlander. They followed the books so well I just don't have the motivation to get to them. /sigh

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about GoT and LOTR - once you know the storyline already, taking all the effort to read the books does seem like a bit much - especially with so many other books on the TBR to get to. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Sydney and stopping by :)

  7. yeah, I don't think I would pick up the LOTR series ever, epic fantasy and I don't get along very well. The Returned is one I requested a while ago because of the TV series, but I kind of lost interest as well.

    1. I don't read much epic fantasy, but I think it's just the size and density of those books in particular which throws me. The Returned, though it looks interesting as a book is something which like you I just don't have the same anticipation for anymore *sigh*
