Genie's Weekly News (50)

Sunday, 24 July 2016

First of all, I can't believe that this time next week Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be released! I know all of us booksellers are excited, and it seems that the hype will only get bigger as the release date looms closer...here's to hoping it lives up.

Caramel Hearts

A book filled with delicious recipes alongside a heartfelt story which tackles some real issues - I'm liking this one!

I finally read another Ginger Scott novel that's been on my TBR for a few months! Up next I'm hoping to get to The Hard Count.

Aussie author Liane Moriarty definitely impressed me with this book - something I wouldn't normally pick up but I am so glad I did! It's not a quintessential chick-lit but a story much deeper, and very well crafted. No wonder why her novels are so popular (I think I've just become a fan).

Thank you to Tara Eglington for the copy!

Tara Eglington is a fantastic #LoveOzYA author who knows how to write cute, heartwarming contemporaries that will make you swoon. I'm definitely looking forward to this one coming in November!

*#BooksfortradeAU Reminder*

I've posted about this on the Aussie YA Bloggers and Readers Group via Facebook and Goodreads, but in case you missed it - #booksfortradeAU is officially back on in 2016! Thanks to everyone who participated this year, it'll be great to see even more getting involved this time around :)

Sunday, 8 May 2016

It's been another busy couple of weeks, but I'm finally back and doing a recap! With lots of assignments to do and mid semester just passing by, it seems I'm actually reading more than usual #gofigure. Anyway, I'm glad to be here and sharing some little insights into what's going on.

Bloggers everywhere are already falling head over heels for this one - and I have to say. so far I am too!

This book actually blew me away  and totally surpassed my expectations! You can read my glowing review of it here.

Another noteworthy mention is Caroline Overington's fifth novel 'The One Who Got Away'. It's a salacious and compelling psychological thriller, with a vibe similar to 'Gone Girl' - but it stands in a league of its own. That twist at the end is one that apparently even the editors didn't see coming - (and neither did I!) As a sidenote, she's an Australian author based in Sydney, so it's great to support local talent.

Thanks to Allen and Unwin and Bloomsbury for these two surprise review copies!

I'm excited to read more YA fantasy, and Amy Tintera has impressed me with 'Reboot' and 'Rebel' (scifi/dystopians) already, so it'll be interesting to see how she writes in this genre. As for Brian Conaghan's novel, I'm definitely intrigued by it - it seems like a dystopian, but with a lot of themes which seem relevant in the context of today.

How has your week been?

Genie's Weekly News (46)

Sunday, 22 November 2015

Well it certainly has been more than a week since my last weekly news update, but I'm finally back with another one. I haven't gotten back into blogging as quickly as I would have liked firstly due to adjusting to my new post-HSC working/life in general schedule and also because my old laptop went kaput. I'm looking for a new replacement, though in the meantime I have to use the shared one which means I can't post as often as I'd like. That aside, I'm looking forward to blog-hopping more again (oh how I miss seeing all your fabulous new posts!) and writing more of my own.

What can I say? This sequel was just as awesome as the first book, and full of even more twists!

Thank you to HarperCollins, Holly and Elspeth for these!
My two most anticipated reads from this haul are definitely arc's of Passenger and Lady Helen and the Dark Days Club! I've loved what Alexandra Bracken has written so far and this new novel of hers has a promising premise! As for the other, I love historical fiction, and this one is by an Australian author as well. Said to be "Buffy x Pride and Prejudice" I can't wait to see how it turns out!

*Recent Events*

Friday night was BTCYA held by the lovely people at HarperCollins Australia! Tim and Amanda did another wonderful job at hosting, and I can definitely say that next year will be filled with some really exciting releases in the YA world! From fantasy to historical, heartbreaking contemporaries and thrilling stories - there will be awesome novels coming from every direction. I'm going to a Sarah J. Maas event this week (!!!) so that is definitely something to look forward to.

*New Facebook Page*

I've just made a facebook page for Genie In A Book where you can catch up on my latest posts and other bookish news from me. You can check it out here!

What's the last amazing book you read?

Genie's Weekly News (42)

I missed last week's installment, so there are a lot of things happening in this one! With STRAY feels abound, as well as a whole heap of new books to add to my shelves, things have been quite busy over here. So without further ado...

What can I say? It's historical fiction by Kate Forsyth at her finest. LOVED.

*Haul*

The Tribe series by Ambelin Kwaymullina - I'm so excited to read this series, especially with the 'Indigenous Futurism' influence'

Invisibility by Andrea Cremer/David Levithan and The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle - I got these through #booksfortradeAU by swapping with Michelle @LovelyGirlReads and can't wait to read them...eventually. In any case, I've been wanting to read The Infinite Moment of Us for aaages so now I finally can.

Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray - This is a monster of a book (it's huge peoples), but since loving The Diviners I hope I enjoy this one too. Thanks Allen and Unwin for the review copy!

The Last Girl/The Last Shot by Michael Adams - Thanks to Chiara @EternalDelicacy for these books through #booksfortradeAU! Yay for Aussie YA post-apocalyptic fiction - I can tell these are gritty reads.

Where the Stars Still Shine by Trish Doller - Another swap with Chiara, and I've also had this on my TBR for a long time so I'm hoping it lives up to my expectations.

The Next Together by Lauren James - Thanks to Walker Books for this ARC! Two people falling in love throughout time - how romantic. I'm really looking forward to this one!

The River and The Book by Alison Croggon/Atmospheric by Carole Wilkinson - These are more books from Walker Books focusing on human rights and the environment respectively.

*STRAY Discussion*

For those of you who have read STRAY by Rachael Craw, a quick reminder that there's a discussion on goodreads where you can share how you felt (with spoilers) because OMG SO MUCH HAPPENED.

*What I've Been Watching*

Since I've been sick with a cold, I've been searching on Netflix for things to watch while nursing a cup of tea, and this came up (ironic huh?). I still don't know exactly how I feel about it after watching the two seasons (warning - it can be both comedic, gory and depressing all at the same time), but Daniel Radcliffe was certainly interesting in this role.

So - how has your week been?

Genie's Weekly News (41)

Sunday, 23 August 2015

Well it has been a while since I've done a weekly wrap up hasn't it? Finally the blog is slowly getting back on track and I'm trying to keep posting more often. In any case, in September there is LOTS to look forward to - think more blog tours, author interviews and guest posts, plus some discussions coming up as well. In the meantime, here's what's been happening recently in my little bookish world:

Now let's just take a moment to admire how pretty Ten Thousand Skies Above You is! (even in ARC form).

*Movie Thoughts*

Madame Bovary

I went to see Madame Bovary on the weekend, and while Mia Wasikowska had a good performance, I can't say I loved the movie. The clashing accents of the actors despite it being set in France, along with the fact that there wasn't so much of an engrossing climax did make it boring in places, especially right at the beginning where there was hardly any dialogue to start.

While it is a tragic tale in essence with a moral lesson at heart: be happy with and appreciate/make the most of what you have, it was a pretty bland movie overall. It's sad because I usually am a fan of historical drama, though in this case I wasn't blown away.

My final rating? 2.5/5

*Other News*
Books for Trade

#booksfortradeAU is still going strong on twitter! It's lovely to see more Aussie bloggers and readers getting involved, and I've participated in a few more swaps myself recently. Look out for my haul in next week's recap :)

This week has overall been a pretty good one and I'm so glad to have more promising books to look forward to and start. How has your week been?
