All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill
Released: 1st August 2013
Series: All Our Yesterdays #1
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Source: Bought
Pages: 362
My Rating: 3 of 5 stars
Goodreads | Book Depository | Bookworld
Em is locked in a bare, cold cell with no comforts. Finn is in the cell next door. The Doctor is keeping them there until they tell him what he wants to know. Trouble is, what he wants to know hasn't happened yet. Em and Finn have a shared past, but no future unless they can find a way out. The present is torture - being kept apart, overhearing each other's anguish as the Doctor relentlessly seeks answers.

There's no way back from here, to what they used to be, the world they used to know. Then Em finds a note in her cell which changes everything. It's from her future self and contains some simple but very clear instructions. Em must travel back in time to avert a tragedy that's about to unfold. Worse, she has to pursue and kill the boy she loves to change the future.
All Our Yesterdays definitely had its good moments, but overall the hype didn't quite deliver for me. I really wanted to love this one, I went in to it with an open mind expecting lots of awesome time-travel action, and while there was some of this:

There was a lot more focus on the relationships with the characters, some romance, and moments like this:

To be honest, even now I'm not quite sure what to make of the ending. For the whole of the book there was tension around the evil Doctor and Em/Finn's mission to bring him down through their past selves. Though I found this to be a really interesting concept that left a lot of room for suspense, all the missed opportunities seemed to drag the storyline unnecessarily and there were some slow parts which I just wanted to wade through to see what exciting development would occur next. By the end, I can see where there will be room for a second book, though at least a little resolution would have been nice to tie the story together and give some point to everything that had happened during the story.

That being said, although the 'thriller' aspect didn't really pick up until the last quarter, the characters throughout were quite well developed. It was good to see how Em and Marina, along with the two Finn's had their similarities and differences in the past and the future. Because of the switching time-frames and stilted plot at times they were a bit difficult to connect to, though at the end I could tell that Em had learnt some  things about herself and what type of person she really wanted to be; no matter what time she existed in. Other characters like James were more complicated, and though I can't see how his developments exactly turned him into his future version, the humanity behind his actions could be understood to an extent in his earlier years.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, although  All Our Yesterdays didn't quite tick all the boxes, I'm still glad that I gave it a go. I will be looking out for the sequel, because there have definitely been some questions raised here which need answers!

Genie's Weekly News (12)

Sunday, 7 December 2014

Hi everyone and welcome to my weekly blog feature to recap the week with bookish news and what to expect coming up! So without further ado...

I was meant to have finished this last month, but with all the other things going on I just couldn't get to it - until now!

Not only is Rachael Craw truly one of the nicest authors out there who really connects with her readers, but her novel is pretty amazing too if you ask me!

Thank you to HarperCollins Australia and Allen and Unwin for sending me these books for review!

  • Faking It by Gabrielle Tozer - I LOVED 'The Intern' so I can't wait to read this sequel and see what shenanigans Josie Browning is involved in this time around!
  • The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart - 'We Were Liars' is one of my top reads of this year, and I can't wait to read this book which the author wrote before that.

Pretty much every time I go to the library, I end up borrowing at least three things, and so this time I seem to have gone down the historical-fiction route. I'm especially looking forward to The Wild Girl by Kate Forsyth since I really enjoyed 'Bitter Greens'. I also borrowed 'American Hustle' since I didn't get a chance to see it at the movies, and I'm saving it for after exams are over.

*Movie Reactions*

I actually watched 22 Jump Street at the movies this year which was hilarious, and so I thought I'd better go back and watch 21 on DVD - and so I did. There are so many links between the two! I like films that are have a deep message, that are YA adaptations and that have historical themes, but sometimes it's nice to have a laugh with something like this too.

*Other news*

While reading and blogging are my passions, it's also time to prioritise. This week is the BIG ONE. Four HSC assessments in three days. So if I'm not blogging as much or or tweeting etc., you know why! (I'll probably be in my study cave drowning in notes).

What would you change? Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain. Only Em can complete the final instruction. She’s tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand.

Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present—imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside. Marina has loved her best friend, James, since they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America’s most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too.

But on one disastrous night, James’s life crumbles, and with it, Marina’s hopes for their future. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it... at least, not as the girl she once was. Em and Marina are in a race against time that only one of them can win. All Our Yesterdays is a wrenching, brilliantly plotted story of fierce love, unthinkable sacrifice, and the infinite implications of our every choice.

So, have any of you bookworms out there read All Our Yesterdays? Any other YA recommendations for books surrounding time travel?
