Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I Didn't Click With

Tuesday 1 September 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by bloggers at The Broke and the BookishThis week I've  picked the top ten characters that I just couldn't connect with.

1. Mollie from Those Girls by Lauren Saft

18249315

Talk about bitchy teenage girl behaviour. To the extreme. Mollie just made me cringe every time she said something and took revenge in a form that was TOTALLY out of line and disgusting.

2. Lily from Well, This is Awkward by Kate Forster

17340564

Oh please Lily - do us all a favour and grow up. She is the perfect example of what 'not to do' at a party and no, it isn't possible to say 'piss off' 'politely'.

3. Madame Bovary from Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

19075

I have to admit, I DNF'd this book - I did find it boring and the characterisation was part of that.

4. Rebecca from The Word Ghost by Christine Paice

20768931

I found the ghosts and cultural references to the 70's way more interesting to read about than the MC unfortunately.

5.Ethan from Beautiful Creatures Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

6304335

He's not necessarily a 'bad' character, just a mellow one who isn't than dynamic as the main character.

6. Alaska from Looking For Alaska by John Green

17416065

UH OH. 'I didn't like a character from a John Green book!? SHOCK HORROR.'
Seriously though, Alaska simply didn't resonate with me. Yes, she is the 'manic pixie dream girl' and there were some sad and philosophical moments, but for whatever reason I simply couldn't click with her and how she treated others.

7. Tia from Riot by Sarah Mussi

20359867

Tia just didn't click with me as a narrator - and her constant use of 'flipping' made me question the breadth of her vocabulary.

8. Riley from This is How it Ends by Jen Nadol

20759561

He just irritated me with his immaturity. And the almost-love-triangle didn't help.

9. Sam from September Girls by Bennet Madison

Don't even get me started on this one. Like Those Girls, the overkill of foul language and insinuations just did not work for me at all.

10. Mimi from The Disappearance of Lizzy Ross by Jessica Schein

18588005

She's the rich, quintessential mean girl  with a drug addiction who just didn't develop in this book - I didn't know what to think.

What characters have you not connected with?

  1. Great list. I actually had EVERY character from Those Girls on my list. I hated them all.

    1. Thanks Cynthia. I can definitely agree with you there - none of them were really likable at all!

  2. This was a fun meme this week and I wish I would have actually participated in it. (I know, I know. I'm a slacker) but it's the truth though. Teehee. I would say one I couldn't connect with probably had to be Cassia from the Matched series? Have you heard of that series?

    1. *gasp* I actually loved the Matched series and didn't have a problem with Cassia, but hey - we all have different opinions so it's all good :)

  3. I can definitely understand that you'd feel that way about Alaska - she's kind of intentionally made that way, I think (same with Margo from Paper Towns).

    1. I agree - I know she wasn't *meant* to be the 'good girl' who gets along with everyone and you are drawn to, but I just ended up being frustrated with her after a while.

  4. The ENTIRE cast of Those Girls made me cringe and cry from frustration. They were simple not nice girls and I hated their "friendship". I don't think I even finished it to be honest... And Sarah Mussi's books *groans*. I don't know how she does it but I do. not. ever. like her protagonists. And Tia was utterly terrible!

    1. Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I soldiered on through it just to see if they learnt from their mistakes...and nope, it was just the same *siiiigh*. I have 'Bomb' by Sarah Mussi to read which looks okay, but I am wary after not liking Tia's characterisation at all!

  5. I totally agree with Ethan, he just felt so bland and boring and the book felt draggy to read because of it! OH DEAR I can't read Looking for Alaska, especially since I hated that trope in Paper Towns. Great post Genie!

    1. I know right? He just seemed like a dry character to me. If that trope is in Paper Towns as well, I'm feeling a bit better now that I haven't read it yet...
